BOOK REVIEW:
Writing reviews for both fiction and nonfiction books are entirely different experiences. Thought not a big fan of nonfiction books, sometimes a rare book from this genre comes across and makes reading it worthwhile. ‘Life outside the Box’ by Marilyn Wilson is one such cherished book. Filled with stories of ten unique individuals, each from different walks of life, this book is nothing short of inspiring.
Each story is beautifully worded with the author seeming to have a personal connection with the person being interviewed. The success stories are each filled with lessons and instances that resonate somehow with the reader. From the story of a footwear designer to an inspiring glimpse into the life of a poet, these are notable celebrities whose paths to success were not the rosy red carpet but filled with failures and setbacks.
The writing is smooth, reader friendly and the narrative is simple and straightforward with not many embellishments. Reading each story made me want to read in detail about the particular celebrities to know a lot more about their success stories and brand recognition. From the eye catching title to the tagline that made me want to take up the book, Life Outside the Box lives up to what the summary promises.
One more feature that caught my eye was the short quote at the start of every story. They were all born out of experiences and gave me a gist of how the life account is going to be. But every time, my expectations were amiss by a wide margin – for the better. Reading this book made me realise that success stories do not necessarily start with a firm background and strong footing with family support. Passion and hard work contributing to success seemed clichéd when read in philosophical self help books, but when real success stories are given as examples of these clichés, we would only have to accept the truth of the statement.
Life outside the box was not just stories of ten successful individuals that offered a unique perspective into the early lives and struggles of people who are popular now – it is a book that shows it readers that fact is usually stranger than fiction and some real life heroes are far better than the fictional ones we often read about.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Marilyn R. Wilson is a freelance writer and editor with a passion for interviewing. It all began in 2006 when the she answered a Craigslist ad from a NY magazine asking for story submissions. Two were accepted. The first live interview was life changing and Wilson has never looked back. With over 150 interviews now behind her, the love of interviewing is still as strong as ever. Whether through a random encounter on the New York subway or via a “one-on-one” interview with an internationally recognized artist, the goal is the same—to share the unique journeys of inspiring individuals.
In 2007, this goal led the author to co-launch a successful, innovative magazine focused on professionals working in the fashion industry, paired with photography and illustrations by local artists. Now on staff at Raine Magazine (NY/Miami/LA), as well as freelancing for other publications, Wilson has taken her passion to a new audience with the release of her first book.
